Photography-focused itineraries combine iconic Colombian species, local conservation efforts, private reserves, photographic hides, feeders, and bird-eye-level techniques.
Los Angeles California – Retorno Photo Tours is highlighting Colombia’s extraordinary bird diversity through specialized photography experiences designed around some of the country’s most distinctive species and ecosystems.
With more than 1,950 recorded bird species, Colombia offers photographers opportunities to encounter hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans, antpittas, raptors, and regional endemics. A Colombia birding tour with Retorno can take participants across the Andes, Caribbean region, Chocó, and other important birding hotspots Colombia is known for.
Among the company’s most requested experiences are encounters with the Andean cock-of-the-rock, endemic hummingbirds, and colorful tanagers. Its Andean cock-of-the-rock tour, Colombia hummingbird tour, and programs focused on tanager photography Colombia give photographers opportunities to work in habitats selected around target species.
Retorno also develops a Colombia endemic birds tour for photographers interested in restricted-range species. Routes can include Santa Marta endemics birding in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Chocó endemic birds Colombia experiences in the country’s western region.
Rather than focusing only on species sightings, each Colombia bird photography tour is structured around photography. Participants may work from carefully positioned hides during a bird photography hide tour, use feeders designed to create controlled photographic opportunities, and practice techniques during an eye-level bird photography workshop.
The company also explains how a feeder photography setup birds session is managed responsibly so photographers can obtain close images without compromising animal welfare. These practices form part of Retorno’s approach to an ethical bird photography tour.
“Each photograph of a bird in Colombia tells two stories: the beauty of the species and the work of the communities that protect it.” — David Casas, founder of Retorno Photo Tours
Retorno works with local communities and private reserves so nature tourism can contribute to habitat protection and sustainable income. The company also supports photographers looking for a small group birding tour Colombia experience, a guided birdwatching tour Colombia, or a bird photography workshop Colombia led by people familiar with the local territory.
As a Colombia birding tour operator, Retorno offers itineraries ranging from dedicated bird trips to a broader wildlife photography tour Colombia experience. Travelers researching best birding tours South America or a luxury birdwatching tour Colombia can select programs based on region, species, photography goals, and preferred accommodation.
Participants can also use a Colombia bird species checklist to prepare for potential sightings before their trip.
David Casas additionally co-founded the Harpy Eagle Nest Initiative Foundation, which is actively working in the Serranía de la Macarena, where six Harpy Eagle nests have been confirmed.
