Wildlife photography program gives photographers access to monitored Harpy Eagle nesting areas while supporting community-based conservation and responsible observation
LOS ANGELES, California — RETORNO PHOTO TOURS Colombia has opened its Harpy Eagle photography expedition across six active nest sites in Colombia, expanding opportunities for wildlife photographers to document one of the Americas’ most powerful raptors during an active nesting period.
The expedition is centered on remote forest habitats where Harpy Eagles are currently nesting and raising young. RETORNO works with local guides and communities to monitor nesting activity and organize access while limiting disturbance around sensitive breeding areas.
The program builds on RETORNO’s existing Harpy Eagle expeditions in the Serranía de la Macarena region of Meta, Colombia. Its standard itinerary includes guided travel into rainforest habitat, early-morning nest observation and dedicated photography sessions. Participants may also encounter other regional wildlife, including toucans, monkeys and additional tropical bird species.
The availability of six active nest sites gives expedition leaders greater flexibility to plan photography activities around current bird activity, field conditions and nesting stages. Harpy Eagle behavior can vary significantly throughout the breeding cycle, from incubation and parental care to the development and early flights of juvenile birds.
RETORNO reported in July that one monitored Harpy Eagle nest near Vista Hermosa had entered a new breeding cycle, with a female incubating while the male supplied food. The company projected that a chick at that site could hatch during September 2026, adding another opportunity to document parental behavior as the nesting season progresses.
Photography activities are conducted according to field conditions and wildlife behavior. RETORNO states that sightings or photographs of specific species cannot be guaranteed because wildlife remains unpredictable. Its expeditions incorporate local guides, ground transportation, reserve access and field logistics designed for remote photography locations.
